Layakari Loop

Climb every ratio in one breath

Loop Practice walks you through every speed ratio of the taal you are on, in one continuous run. Your hands keep one steady avartan of the base taal while the bols inside each matra double, triple, quadruple, and climb to the top ratio of your chosen taal. Each ratio holds for exactly one base avartan, then a bell marks the next stage. The loop stops on its own at the end.

Ekgun

एकगुण

One bol per matra. The taal breathes at its natural pace. Use this as your reference before stacking faster ratios on top.

The craft of layakari

Layakari is the art of holding one steady taal in your body while faster speeds weave above it. The matra never changes length, only the number of notes that fill it. Every Kathak dancer builds this sense one ratio at a time, and with a dependable reference underneath, the climb from dugun to tigun to chaugun settles into muscle memory.

How Laya Kari walks with you

At ekgun, the full theka plays as your anchor. At higher ratios, a steady click holds the base taal while the tabla bols stream at 2×, 3×, 4×, 5× or 7× above it, filling each matra with the exact ratio. Land your padhant, tatkaar or bol-baant on top. The grid never drifts, so when you slip you can hear it and settle right back in. That feedback loop is what turns effort into instinct.
